“Along the way” with David Vanden-Eynden

SEGD Fellow David Vanden-Eynden shared his unique brand of pragmatism and humor with students at the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning yesterday.
Lesson One, aimed at an audience of graphic, interior, industrial, and digital design students—some with little exposure to environmental graphic design—was how wayfinding and signage, placemaking and branding can contribute to the built environment and improve the quality of life. In a world made more complex every day, “Wayfinding is about clear communications and a universal language that makes the world easier to understand.”
Sharing insights from 30+ years as a designer and principal (with Chris Calori) of New York-based Calori & Vanden-Eynden/Design Consultants, Vanden-Eynden shared the firm’s work and some good advice, including:
1. Starting is only half of the design process; finishing is the other half.
2. Don’t fall in love with your first idea.
3. Ideas are the one resource of which you have an endless supply.
4. Simple is the best, but it’s really hard.
5. Doubts are OK, but don’t let them get in your way and don’t back down.
6. Have passion.
7. Don’t quit.
8. Just because you can put type in the shape of a fish doesn’t mean you should.
9. If you aren’t having fun, why bother?
10. And the secret to success, according to Vanden-Eynden? “Work harder than everyone else.”– P.M.K.

Simple is better: With a "ridiculously low" budget at Royal Executive Park, CV&E had to leverage every last scrap of material. To sign a six-building complex, they cut the building numbers out of stainless steel and rotated them 90 degrees in the voids. (Photo: James R. Morse)
Helvetica comes to Argentina

In 1971, the City Hall gave Diseno Shakespear and Guillermo Gonzalez Ruiz a job later called the Visual Plan for Buenos Aires. This project was unique in context not only because of its huge scale but from the dynamic interaction with the client and some decisions that not only made the project possible but that also assured its survival.(See Eye 63 UK, Domus 159, Graphis 168).This was first time that Helvetica was used in Argentina’s urban landscape. — A.M.

The interface for Wonderwall’s website is so dang nifty that your devoted blogger can’t even figure out how to peel an image off of it to post. So click here to check Perfect Hideout ipod it out, making sure to move your cursor around the home page. Fair warning: cats seem disturbed by the sound effects. — A.M.

“PieLab– the vision of 14 young Project M designers, is transforming from pop-up experimental pie shop to permanent downtown eatery in Greensboro, Alabama. This expansion will elevate our level of engagement among the residents of Greensboro and the surrounding area of Hale County. The new space will be equipped with a full service kitchen, a community-focused design studio, as well as classroom space which will be used to train local youth through the Youth Build program. ” (Thanks for the lead, Sarah Speare!) — A.M.

What is The Art Office?
Titan A.E. movie download
The Art Office is a multi-disciplinary office for art, architecture, and design. We work out of a 2000 sq. ft. warehouse in Indio, CA, (in the Palm Springs area) where we have 600 sq. ft. dedicated to a clean space for drawing and computers and 1400 sq. ft. dedicated to a build space for experimentation and fabrication. We enjoy being hands-on and involved in all types of projects from inception through completion. It is our desire to mesh the art and architecture disciplines as a means of creating innovative spaces and inventing new forms of architecture, while working at all scales of design. We seek to involve the client as a crucial link to design innovation, to involve, challenge, and learn from builders and fabricators, to redefine existing forms of communication, and to create work that meshes with the community, creates place, and that establishes its own identity.

Moldova is one of the smallest, and definitely the poorest country in Europe. However, even with the population of only 4 million, and the land mass approximately equal to the state of Maryland, they still managed to have some good designers . The design firm is design.md. I believe they do mostly websites and logos, but I just love the name! It must be the benefit of living in such a small country. There’s a link to the English version of it in the upper right corner, but the Romanian language version is more recent and not so hard to navigate. Check out the photos too.
