There’s been an interesting discussion thread on the SEGDtalk list serve regarding public art. SEGDster Hyla Lipson of Fiberoptic Lighting queried for examples of public art, asking “If you were to pick your favorite public art from the beginning of time – what would it be?” Lipson also raised the interesting question: “do you consider monuments examples of public art – like the Vietnam Memorial?  Or even the statue of Einstein in Washington, DC?”

Needless to say, Lipson’s inquiry stirred up a lot of responses from the SEGD community. Here are just a few examples of what SEGDsters offered up: in Australia the ConnectEast’s public artwork program and the Melbourne Gatewaysculptures in Omaha, NE; in Los Angeles, the banners on the Santa Monica Pier by Michael McMillen and Steve Galloway; Chicago’s Millennium Park Rohtenburg full movie ; and Arts for Transit

Mean Girls film

in New York. There was also a “shout out” to the Corn Palace download I Want Candy movie in Mitchell, North Dakota. Other suggested links included Public Art Around the World and City of Melbourne Public Art. It just goes to show you public art cannot be narrowly defined, and the SEGD community sure is a great resource! — S.N.
